femtech:brief #05: AI and Femtech
đđ˝đđ˝ Hello and welcome to the fifth edition of femtech:brief. With advancements in technology, there is so much that can happen in health care. AI is a buzzword we hear everywhere and femtech is no different. This week we explore how AI is driving the femtech space.
It is an amazing time for AI in health care. The power of AI is to create clinical efficiency, derive new clinical insights, enable personalised medicine, provide clinical decision support and improve overall healthcare outcomes.
Data and femtech
Data is fundamental for all tech sectors but for femtech in particular is both a challenge and an opportunity. Historically, we do not find much research data centered in womenâs health or clinical trials with women representation, and this is only to show that not much attention was being paid to such important sector.
In the femtech realm data is fundamental to derive plans, products, and insights that will serve women across all phases of life, from menstruation and birth control, to sexual health and menopause. Fecmtech.Live has a great article involving data-driven femtech companies and tells us about the meaning of data in the sector and how to use it in order to get the most of it.
Presagen - AI Enhanced Healthcare - has taken the meaning of data to a new level. Understanding the importance of inclusion and representation for women all over the world, Presage has opened a clinic-centric model which means they work collaboratively with and for clinics globally, enabling access to diverse global datasets through its AI platform.
Sourcing globally diverse data, we remove the bias associated with individual clinics, whether it is related to patient demographics or clinical setting. And our AI, which is built on this data, can be generalized to other clinics.
Presagen - AI Enhanced Healthcare
The companyâs software-based scalable AI technology is designed to be delivered globally at low cost, to maximise reach to women across the world. In the field of IVF, Presagenâs Life Whisperer technology uses AI to analyse images of embryos, selecting the healthiest ones to improve pregnancy outcomes for couples struggling with fertility.
ML-Driven Personalised Health Journey
Femtechâs use of AI and ML and data-driven solutions has impacted the lives of many women and will continue to do so.
Maven, founded in 2014 by Kate Ryder, is creating a new kind of family care. Maven is a virtual womenâs and family healthcare provider and is the most comprehensive platform of its kind, providing critical support across fertility, pregnancy, adoption, parenting, and pediatrics. Since their launch, theyâve helped millions of women and families navigate their health by putting them at the center of careâwhere they belong. They recently announced to have raised $110M in Series D.
ClosedLoop.ai, a data science platform that aims to use artificial intelligence and machine learning in healthcare, scooped up $34 million in Series B financing.
AIâs success in healthcare has taken longer than other industries because the complexity of healthcareâs issues outweigh those of other applications.
Sam Palmisano, former CEO of IBM and ClosedLoop investor.
ClosedLoopâs data science platform combines AI tools and automation capabilities with healthcare-specific content and expertise enabling healthcare data scientists to build accurate and explainable predictive models with speed and ease.
Clue, a Berlin-based startup uses AI and ML to predict periods, PMS, and fertility. Clue enables women to get period, PMS, and fertile window predictions based on the most up-to-date science. It also provides clear visualizations to see all the tracked data in the Calendar and an overview in Analysis.

AI and mammograms
MammoScreenÂŽ is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) solution that assists radiologists in reading screening mammograms.
The true value of technology isnât measured by how powerful it is, but by how much it empowers you. Based on cases interpreted by expert radiologists and using state of the art deep learning techniques, MammoScreenÂŽâs neural networks learn to detect and characterize suspicious findings.
MammoScreenÂŽ builds on the latest machine learning techniques to leverage information contained at lesion, breast and mammogram level.
Three other elements MammoScreenÂŽ are keeping an aye on are: explainability, reliability, and resilience.
